SPOR New Music School –

contemporary music and sound art for children and young people

SPOR New Music School (SNMS) is a school of composition for young music school students of 11-15 years.

The first initiative took place in May 2015. At the centre of SNMS is a number of intense workshop days, where children and young people from the music schools of Region Midtjylland compose new musical works to be performed at SPOR festival.

The composer and film-maker Ida Bach Jensen followed the process – see her film about SPOR New Music School 2015 and 2016 here.

What’s taking place in 2017?

Everything culminates on 12th–14th May 2017. On Sunday the 14th of May, the students are to be ready with brand-new compositions on the main stage of SPOR festival.

SPOR festival works thematically, focusing each year on a new, topical theme. In 2017, it revolves around the magic and mystery of the everyday life, among other things. The festival theme is reflected in the composition assignment to be solved, and in the concerts and meetings with composers and professional musicians and ensembles, which also take place during the project.

At SNMS, one does not work alone – we divide the students into groups, and each group is assigned a student from the composition line at the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus/Aalborg as its mentor. Together with the pedagogical leader of SNMS, Østen Mikal Ore, they will help to ensure drive, support and creative sparring in suitable doses.

What’s taking place in the years to come?

SPOR New Music School has been made possible thanks to a three-year grant from Aarhus 2017 Fonden, which will last up to and including the year of the European Capital of Culture. From 2018 onwards, SPOR will be working to continue the established collaborations and be a platform for an annual injection of new music for children and young people.

Why SPOR New Music School?

SPOR wants to inspire children to be curious, to create, listen and perform new and experimental music and sound art. At the festival we believe it is important to boost the creative process as a complement to playing an instrument, so creativity and musicality can go hand in hand. And finally we would like to share from the creativity and imagination, which is obtained each year during SPOR festival.
