Sven-Åke Johansson, born 1943 in Mariestad, living in Berlin since 1968, is a Swedish drummer, composer, actor and artist. One of the central figures of the european free jazz and free improvisation scene since the 1960’s. After his stay in Paris, where he plaid as a wellknown drummer with BeBop bands and a short stay in Wuppertal and Cologne, the centre of improvisation in Westgermany at that time, he moves to Berlin in the 1970’s.
There he is involved in the Fluxus scene. He develops new musical concepts using common items, such as phonebooks, trash and unusual materials as instruments in order to negotiate the borders between life and art. In sometimes-destructive performances, more or less free improvised, he is searching for the sound-aesthetic unexpected event.
By deconstructing the traditional systems in music - in his work, new aspects of the production of sound are presented, often leaving a very sensual and visually narrative impression for the observer.
