An examination of the interplay between image, code, and manual practice through fiberglass scores, sonic translation, and material disruption, positioning human labor as a symbolic force within the technological system.

Info about the piece

Toke Højby Lorentzen works at the intersection of sound and image as a semantically fluid field, where the two media continuously inform and transform one another. In the series Strategic Opacity, Lorentzen examines the interplay between image, code, and manual practice through fiberglass scores, sonic translation, and material disruption, positioning human labor as a symbolic force within the technological system.

For SPOR, Lorentzen will present his work on yet another score from the series, which aims to let loose the algorithm that decodes it, resulting in a translation with autonomous result-generating capabilities.

Toke Højby Lorentzen (1988) moves across art forms to create a dialogue between sound, text, performance, software, tapestry, and sculpture.

Through ambiguity, gaps in meaning, and the leaps that arise between these forms of expression, Lorentzen explores the creation of meaning – and its fleeting character. This is done with particular interest in cracks in asphalt, holes in fabric, punch cards, and noise – phenomena that are generally perceived as useless or undesirable.

From these points of departure, Lorentzen examines which alternative narratives, dissonances, and shifts emerge when one attempts to approach the subjects from new angles. Through complex systems, humor, and technology, Lorentzen creates works that investigate how we as humans construct meaning, and how this meaning is often unstable, ambiguous, or contradictory. In his work, Lorentzen seeks to advocate for ambiguity by exploring inconsistencies and gaps in meaning as liberating openings that invite us to think.
