“Consciousness is an experience of inexperiencible experiences.” A live electronic performance exploring inner perceptions through unstable machines, voice, and immersive sound textures.

Info about the piece

A live electronic performance that explores the relationship between inner perception, sound, and technological mediation. Inspired by the Georgian philosopher Merab Mamardashvili, whose idea that “consciousness is an experience of inexperiencible experiences” forms the conceptual foundation of the work, the performance investigates how sound can communicate emotional and psychological states that resist language. Rather than describing such inner experiences directly, the piece creates a sonic environment in which they can be felt. The contribution takes the form of a live experimental performance combining analog electronic instruments, live processing, voice, and acoustic wooden instruments.

The work unfolds as a sequence of evolving sounds moving between pure electronic textures, subtly amplified voice, and gestural manipulation of analog equipment. Vocal fragments and acoustic sounds are processed through analog effects, dissolving into layers of drones, noise, and fragile harmonic structures that gradually transform over time. A central element of the performance is the sonic character of analog machines themselves. Their hum, hiss, and instability become active musical materials—audible traces of time and technological memory. These imperfections shape a sound world that is constantly shifting, eroding, and reforming, where unpredictability becomes part of the compositional process.

Thematically, the piece addresses consciousness, emotional interiority, and the fragile boundary between personal experience and collective perception. During the performance, the audience encounters a continuously evolving sonic landscape shaped in real time. Through immersive sound transformations, listeners are invited into a contemplative space where inner, “inexperiencible” experiences become temporarily audible and shared through listening.

Sophia Sagaradze (1997) is a Georgian composer, sound artist, and performer based in Denmark. Her artistic practice operates at the intersection of music, technology, and spatial experience, exploring how sound interacts with architecture, perception, and the presence of the audience.

Working across electronic and electroacoustic composition, multichannel sound, interactive installations, and multimedia performance, she develops immersive environments where listening becomes both a physical and conceptual experience. A central focus of her work is the transformation of acoustic and electronic materials through sound spatialization. Sagaradze frequently combines live electronics, movement, light, and visual elements, creating interdisciplinary performances that blur the boundaries between concert, installation, and performative space.

Her projects often investigate identity, perception, and the relationship between internal and external sonic environments. Her works and performances have been presented internationally at festivals, museums, and cultural venues including Klang Festival, Struer Tracks, and Kune Festival. She has also presented installations and performances across Europe and internationally, including projects in Austria, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Georgia, China, and other countries. Alongside her artistic practice, she is the founder and artistic director of Aarhus Lydforening, an artist-run platform supporting experimental sound practices and collaborative production environments.
